Manual lymphatic drainage

Gentle coaching for swelling and fluid retention.

The lymphatic system plays an important role in the body's fluid balance and defence. When drainage is disturbed by illness, surgery or prolonged load, fluid can build up and cause complaints such as swelling, a heavy feeling, fatigue or pain. With light, structured hand techniques, manual lymphatic drainage supports the clearance of excess fluid. The treatment is matched to the cause, location and extent of the swelling, and where needed it is part of a wider rehabilitation programme.

Who it's for

  • Congenital or acquired lymphoedema
  • Lymphoedema after surgery, radiotherapy or the removal of lymph nodes, including as part of cancer treatment
  • Venous oedema, such as swollen lower legs or ankles when venous return is reduced
  • Swelling or fluid retention in the arms, legs or face
  • A heavy or tight feeling in a limb
  • Pregnancy-related fluid retention, after consultation with the clinician involved
  • Specific jaw complaints, or other complaints for which the specialised therapist considers lymphatic drainage appropriate
  • Certain neurological, circulatory, rheumatic or stress-related complaints, only after individual assessment and, where needed, in consultation with the doctor

How we work

  • An extended intake on your history, complaints and medical follow-up
  • Gentle, structured hand techniques adapted to your situation
  • A review of the effect, and a discussion of frequency and what comes next
  • Combination with movement, advice or other therapy when that is indicated

What to expect

A calm treatment by a therapist with specific expertise in manual lymphatic drainage. With unexplained or sudden swelling, a medical assessment is needed first.
